MeTMapS - Medical Terminology Mapping System
نویسندگان
چکیده
Motivation: Medical terminology mapping is a long-standing challenge for projects requiring retrieval, querying and integration of heterogeneous patient data. Current tools fail to fully uti-lise the richness of the underlying coding systems, and can be difficult to install and maintain. For example, National Library of Medicine's UMLS provides a rich collection of terminology mapping , however, its search results are displayed in a simplistic general purpose interface that cannot easily be navigated and results filtered according to user's preferences. Specifically, returned results cannot be visualised in a tree to show positions and relationships. BioPortal offers a large number of terminologies and ontologies, each of which can be viewed in a tree structure , however it does not allow for multiple ontologies to be viewed and compared on a single page. Our work aims to address these issues and provide a simple and easy to use terminology mapping software. Results: MeTMapS was evaluated with academic and clinical research users. The users have tested the mapping between ICD10, Read CTV2, V3 in Hypertension. It was also tested on a list of clinical terms from the inclusion and exclusion criteria of the INFORM clinical trial protocol. Our initial evaluation produced positive results. Availability: We are currently in the process of updating the design based on some improvements suggested by the participants. MeTMapS is developed under Apache V2 license and is currently hosted at KCL for internal use and will shortly be opened to the public once the internal security concerns are resolved. In the meantime, the tool is available from the author upon request.

Mapping Clinical Notes to Medical Terminologies at Point of Care
Clinicians write the reports in natural language which contains a large amount of informal medical term. Automating conversion of text into clinical terminologies allows reliable retrieval and analysis of the clinical notes. We have created an algorithm that maps medical expressions in clinical notes into a medical terminology. This algorithm indexes medical terms into an augmented lexicon. It ...
متن کاملExperiences mapping a legacy interface terminology to SNOMED CT
BACKGROUND SNOMED CT is being increasingly adopted as the standard clinical terminology for health care applications. Existing clinical applications that use legacy interface terminology need to migrate to the preferred SNOMED CT standard. In this paper, we describe our experience and methodology for mapping concepts from a legacy system to SNOMED CT. METHODS Our approach includes the establi...
متن کاملA Terminology Server for medical language and medical information systems.
GALEN is developing a Terminology Server to support the development and integration of clinical systems through a range of key terminological services, built around a language-independent, re-usable, shared system of concepts--the CORE model. The focus is on supporting applications for medical records, clinical user interfaces and clinical information systems, but also includes systems for natu...
متن کاملAutomatic Mapping Clinical Notes to Medical Terminologies
Automatic mapping of key concepts from clinical notes to a terminology is an important task to achieve for extraction of the clinical information locked in clinical notes and patient reports. The present paper describes a system that automatically maps free text into a medical reference terminology. The algorithm utilises Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques to enhance a lexical token m...
متن کاملUMLS-Query: A Perl Module for Querying the UMLS
The Metathesaurus from the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) is a widely used ontology resource, which is mostly used in a relational database form for terminology research, mapping and information indexing. A significant section of UMLS users use a MySQL installation of the metathesaurus and Perl programming language as their access mechanism. We describe UMLS-Query, a Perl module that pr...
